The Joy of Science

Course Number 11000 lectures (30 minutes/lecture)

Taught by: Professor Robert M. Hazeneorge Mason University and Carnegie Institution of Washington

Understanding the physical world around us is a source of endless wonder and intellectual joy.

Have you ever felt, perhaps while visiting a favorite museum, that you would like to know more about electricity, chemistry, physics, geology, our new understanding of genetics, the ozone hole, or even Einstein's celebrated theory of relativity? Or perhaps you'd just like to be able to explain what makes an ordinary light bulb work, or how gravity operates over a distance.

This course offers you a special, even unique, learning opportunity. It steers clear of the jargon and needless mathematical abstractions that so often bedevil science education. It features an integrated approach that allows you as a learner to transcend artificial disciplinary boundaries in order to gain a synoptic view of the whole scientific enterprise in all its breathtaking scope. You can claim for yourself what Professor Hazen calls "the incredible human adventure of scientific discovery."

The Joy of Science will provide you with a clear and bracing overview of the scientific worldrom the laws of motion first formulated 300 years ago by Sir Isaac Newton, to the latest marvels of contemporary genetic research.

Your guide is Dr. Robert M. Hazen of George Mason University and the Carnegie Institution of Washington. Using anecdotes about everyday life to enliven his lectures, Dr. Hazen will share with you his love of scientific discovery and show you connections between such discoveries over time. Dr. Hazen is an apostle of science education for non-scientists, and he has few peers at rendering the most complex ideas simple, without being simplistic. Make no mistakehis is a course for adults, but it may also be helpful for young people to heighten their scientific understanding outside the classroom.

Order The Joy of Science today. You'll walk alongside the greatest minds in the history of science. You'll learn to grasp scientific laws, and the manifold relations among them, as never before. You'll come to see what makes science such a powerful tool for observing the world, explaining how it works, and making predictions about what our future may hold.
