Guess it's about time to update this a little since a thing or two has changed
since it was written. For one thing, it seems the RIAA may have crossed one
line too many a while back, we'll have to see where that leads.
---

If you use ProtoWall, Peer Guardian, or other list-based IP blocking software,
this probably won't interest you. But if you want, keep it available for
download by others.

If you DO NOT use ProtoWall, Peer Guardian, or any other IP blocking software,
READ ON.

The Problem:

For a long time now the RIAA, MPAA, and MANY OTHERS have been waging war
against the Peer too Peer file sharing community. And some of them have a
very active "Dirty Tricksdepartment. They spy on the P2P community,
and sometimes use frivolous lawsuits etc. as attempts at intimidation. But
some also use, fake file servers, corrupted file servers, and of course,
what ammounts to illegal mini-DoS attacks. And their activities seem to be
fairly well coordinated within "their" community". (I'm lumping many
organizations, corporate entities, etc. togather here, who have many
different points of interest and are responsible for diverse kinds of
activitie in opposition to peer-to-peer file shareing.)

Fake file servers distribute files with the names of legitimate files, but
contain only "0" or some other garbage, with the intent that you waste time
and bandwidth downloading a file that is useless. Also I've seen file names
shuffled around so you get a different file than the one you think you're
getting.

Corrupted file servers spew out corrupted elements of legitimate files. When
your P2P client downloads and tests such an element, finds it corrupt, and
dumps it to re-download, it cost time and bandwidth. If it isn't detected
for some reason, you have a useless file.

I've also seen files with one critical element missing from the initial
distribution. I remember one large file that hundreds of people had 99.9%
of and everyone waited for around three months for the last element which
didn't exist. Haven't seen that tactic in a long time, and it's easily
avoided now anyway.

Mini-DoS-attacks eat up bandwidth, slow down transfers and can cause other
problems. DoS, (Denial of Service) attacks are now a federal offense in the
US. Some entities fighting the P2P community sometimes harp about copyright
infringement etc. but seem to believe that Federal Law doesn't apply to them.

Some of the people doing mischief in the P2P community seem to be private
individuals but are really working for one of the ap2p entities.

A side effect of the activities of the Anti-P2P group, (as well as the
"porn peddlers" and their XXX rated animated banners, and browser-seasing
web sites), is an overall reduction in bandwidth and general internet resources
available for all legitimate internet users.

The Solution:

A good thing in this matter is to be well informed on what's going on.
A good source for pertinent info is to check out the forums at,
"http://www.bluetack.co.uk", where you can also download some very good
software needed by all P2P users if they don't already use them or similar
security apps. That said, I offer the following advice:

Everyone hooked into the net needs a firewall, but for P2P file sharing,
a good blocklist-based IP blocker is the real tool. Some firewalls have this
ability as an added feature, or a plug-in. Outpost is an example, and KPF,
(Kerio Personal Firewall), works well with stand-alone IP blockers. The WinXP
built-in firewall is very waek and rudimentary. eMule, (and probably eDonkey),
can also use a blocklist to avoid FFS etc., But I like a stand-alone IP
blocker, (for flexibility if nothing else).

Note: An IP blocker is not a firewall, and a firewall is not an IP blocker.
but some firewalls can do both.

As for stand-alone IP blockers, there are some good ones. One that immediately
comes to mind is "ProtoWall", (available from "BlueTack" mentioned above).
It's install is a little more involved than some, but since it is driver based,
it requires very little in the way of processing resources, your system will
feel practically no load from it. You install it, point it at a blocklist file,
and it does the rest. Can also protect your browsing, (HTML, port 80). It uses
the PeerGuardian-format blocklist.
"http://www.bluetack.co.uk (look there for ProtoWall)

Another stand-alone IP blocker is Peer Guardian. Version 2.0 will be released
soon. PG-2 LITE is available now, but is a stripped-down version. By the time
you read this, the full version of PG-2.0 may be available anyway. In it's early
stages Peer Guardian was a "processor hog", but I think they've rewritten the
code and fixed that now. It's supposed to be easy to install and easy on the
system. Can also protect browsing. Available at - "http://phoenixlabs.org/pg2/"

UPDATE - PeerGuardian 2 Beta 6b - current version as of 12/20/05 has been available
for some time now from "http://phoenixlabs.org/pg2/". I've been using
the "Bets 6a" version for several months now and it's worked well for me.
None of the resource hogging of earlier versions, and it installs easy.

Now you need a BLOCKLIST. There are several sources, and several types of
blocklist, focused in different areas. Here I recommend another program named
"The Blocklist Manager" or BLM for short. It will quickly download a source
list, let you select the blocklist(s) you want for assembly into a combined
blocklist, then convert that blocklist to the format you want, and save it
to the directory of your choice. It has many other features as well. It is
available at - "http://www.bluetack.co.uk", same as "ProtoWall.

If you use Blocklist Manager and have a 56K MODEM link, you may want to stop
your P2P client, (eMule, eDonkey, Sharaza etc.) while having BLM get your
new list. That is, if it times out while fetching the "level 1" file for
instance. But if it gets the files ok with the P2P client running, no problem.

UPDATE - I think they may have tuned the code a little so BLM don't time-out
so easily. I haven't had any troubble with it timeing out in a long time.

In Summery:

Circumstances have developed to where members of the Peer-too-Peer file
sharing community need protection from the mischief worked against them on
the internet by the RIAA, MPAA, and others bent on crippling P2P if they
can. Since they can't really do anything to effect P2P any other way,
they're at war with P2P on "the net" its self, resorting to whatever "dirty
tricks" can be devised.

IP blockers and firewalls are very effective against their efforts. You
should at least use an IP blocker, but the absence of a firewall leaves your
system vulnerable in some bad ways. Use both if you can, or a firewall that
can also use an IP blocklist.

I use KPF, (firewall), ProtoWall, (IP blocker), and BLM, (blocklist manager),
with great success. - UPDATE - I now use PeerGuardian-2 because I tried it and
it worked well. Protowall worked well too, but was a little harder to install.

Agnitum Outpost 2.x is a really good firewall, and there is a plug-in to use a
PeerGuardian blocklist. But it won't run with other firewalls/IP blockers.

With KPF and ProtoWall, (or PeerGuardian) properly configured and running,
I can set back and watch various attacks being deflected and find no noticeable
effect on my usable bandwidth or transfer speeds. And ProtoWall, (or PeerGuardian)
stomps Fake-File packets and such at the door.

BTW, your blocklist should be updated at least once or twice a week. Daily
is ok if convenient.

The Point:

With properly used firewall and IP blocker, your P2P experience is made
better, and any annoyance caused by the Anti-P2P Bunch, will likely be over
the principles involved. (P2P in it's various forms is more important
then the concerns of the RIAA, for one thing).

If everyone in the P2P community used proper IP blocking, and firewall
protection, "The Enemies of Peer to Peer", (as they are sometimes called),
could just hang it up and go find a job. They've already lost the battle
anyway, but that would get it across to them quicker and they could quit
wasting the internet's bandwidth and other resources. Resources they tie
up don't effect the P2P community that much specifically, but it reduces
to some degree what's available for everyone.

Those damned web-site porn-peddlers need to get a life too.
