t.A.T.u. Biography.
Originally assembled by former TV-commercial producer Ivan Shapovalov after auditioning hundreds of candidates at Moscow's Mostfilm studios, t.A.T.u. (aka Taty) comprised Julia Olegovna Volkova (aka Julia Volkova; born 1985) and Elena Sergeevna Katina (aka Lena Katina; born 1984). Named after an internationally fashionable word, the teen pop duo delivered captivating melodies and controversial lyrics and signed up to Universal Music Russia on May 16, 2001. Their debut single, "Ya Soshla s Uma (I've Lost My Mind)," based on a story about a lesbian affair between two young girls, became their first smash, gaining international exposure through MTV (Top Five on the most requested videos chart). After issuing a second single called "Nas Ne Dogoniat (They Won't Catch Us)," their album 200 km/h in the Wrong Lane was released.

Russian pop tarts t.A.T.u. are making a comeback - and the faux lesbians are getting an unlikely helping hand from '70s cheeseball crooner Richard Carpenter, who along with sister Karen made up easy-listening duo The Carpenters. t.A.T.u., whose real names are Yulia Volkova and Lena Katina, have also enlisted the help of Sting, who recorded bass on one of their upcoming tracks, according to the London Sun. No word on whether the girls will engage in sapphic tongue play this time around - once a major part of their shtick.

t.A.T.u.'s "All About Us" Single on a Radio Station Near You Soon!
t.A.T.u. will release to radio the first single from their forthcoming "Dangerous and Moving" album this month. The commercial single will be released in most of the world on Sept. 26th to be followed by the album on Oct. 10th/11th.
