!! STEP 1 - Install
First of all you need to download and install a program called BitTorrent which uses distributed packet swarming to achieve downloads at very high bitrates with almost no upload bandwidth from seeds (those hosting and contributing to the download).
Get BitTorrent either here:

or find it on your P2P programs as "[Free] BitTorrent-3.2.1.exe"
(the "[Free]" at the beginning enables the auto-upload feature of MXMoni (more about MXMoni further down))
!! STEP 2 - Download
Once BitTorrent is installed all there is left to do is find host files (known as Torrents). These come in the format of .torrent files, which can be found on various websites and also via your favorite P2P program (kazaa etc)
You may need to configure your P2P client to notice files with the .torrent extension (most P2P programs by default only list files with common extensions (.exe .zip .avi etc etc)
These .torrent files are very small, containing only the information your BitTorrent client needs to connect to the host's tracker.
With BitTorrent installed you won't need to do anything other than double-click the .torrent file you downloaded (or simply click the link if it's a website) and BitTorrent will connect and begin swarming your file to you. It's that simple!
!! STEP 3 - THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP !!!!!
The way BitTorrent works is each person who is currently downloading the same file as you (or has finished it) is at the same time uploading it to a few of the other people who have less of the file.
WHEN YOU FINISH DOWNLOADING FROM A TORRENT LEAVE THE DOWNLOAD WINDOW OPEN AS LONG AS POSSIBLE! THIS IS WHERE YOU AND EVERYONE ELSE GETS THE HIGH BITRATE FROM!! IF NOBODY LEAVES THEIR DOWNLOADS OPEN AFTER IT FINISHED THE WHOLE IDEA OF FILE SWARMING WOULD FAIL!
So if you want to be able to download at these unbelievably high bitrates you need to also do your part. Same as any P2P client, if you're not uploading anything chances are you're not gonna get anything from anyone else either.
!! STEP 4 - Hosting a file with BitTorrent (optional)
If you would like to host files for other people to start downloading from you, go to
http://bitconjurer.org/BitTorrent and download the completedir utility. Follow the instructions included and enable your P2P to access your torrents folder or move the .torrent files to your share folder. (If you move or rename any of your hosted torrents you'll have to create new .torrents)
IMPORTANT: You may have to change your client's options to get it to share out that file type (.torrent). WinMX I know for a fact requires this action. You may also want to add "[Free]" to the front of the torrent file name to enable users to skip your clients queue since the file is quite small.
---- MXMoni (WinMX Monitor) ----
If you've never heard of this program, this is a VERY good utility for making WinMX much better and faster at retrieving your downloads. It performs all the actions you'd normally waste a good hour doing yourself (especially for you heavy downloaders like me). It automatically finds alternates for files in your transfer downloads (aka wish list), and automatically remotely queues you. Additionally MXMoni has a trading feature (I know you get tons of requests for trades) and now you can trade automatically and without getting stiffed! If someone in your upload queue has a file you want (in your download queue) you will automatically trade with them. Instantly! So the more people with MXMoni the better FOR YOU!
NOTE: If you don't have something they want you probably wont get to trade with them (duh) so it's a good idea to share as much GOOD stuff as you can fill your HDD with. Sharing a bunch of useless crap wont get you anyway.
---- Other file sharing tips ----
Don't share something that can be downloaded (freely or shareware trials) from any website, if it's something that has a crack, share ONLY THE CRACK itself and if anything include the URL where they can download the software on their own.
Try to avoid multiple copies of the same file (if one file is corrupt or lower quality, DELETE it!)
Don't share out your C:\Program Files or C:\Windows directories! That's stupid! Only share files that are packaged.
Files that are under 1 Meg should be renamed with "[Free]" at the beginning of the filename to allow people to get them faster since they are so small. You can also do this with any file you want people to be able to download immediately from you (torrents, documents such as this, etc)
---------= How to avoid fake movies: =---------
There are now a lot of 'fake' or wrongly named movies in circulation,
also some deliberately corrupt files.
If you are in possession of a complete movie that was wrongly named, NAME IT CORRECTLY don't keep redistributing it under the wrong title. Or delete it.
If you are aware of this, it's very simple to make sure you don't waste
your time and bandwith downloading the wrong file.
1: As soon as you try to start the download and the file is in your queue
(whether it's actually downloading or not), right-click it and select
'Search for Alternates'
Look at the filenames that the search produces.
If they are mostly the same as the file you want, then it's probably OK.
If they are mostly different - other film titles, not just format variations,
then the file you are downloading has probably been re-named.
2: As soon as you have the first few megabytes of the movie (5 - 10MB), play it
and check the title!
Normal programs (such as MS Media Player) cannot play incomplete .AVI files,
as there is an index block at the end of the file.
Get 'VirtualDub' - this is a small, neat (and free) Video Editor program,
which will load and play partial .AVI files.
Just copy the partially downloaded movie file from your 'incoming' directory
(folder) to a temporary directory, then run VirtualDub, load the file and
press the play button.
- Don't try and play the file while it is actually downloading! This either
won't work, or may mess up the download. Copy it first - you can copy it
whilst it's downloading, and play the copy.
