Getting The Most From Bearshare
===============================
First of all, disable the Family Filter in the Setup/Searching menu.
It does not work correctly and can block files that you do not want
blocked. In some cases, it can drastically lower your search results
on files that have nothing to do with pornography and similar "smut"
files.
Raise your Message TTL to 9 in the Setup/Advanced menu. This will get
you more search results but may make host connections unstable. If
you raise your Message TTL and find that you have difficulty keeping
host connections, lower it to 7 or 8.
If you are having trouble with low horizons, try searching for
something common, like 'game' or 'simpsons'. This can quickly raise
your horizons. If this makes your horizons unstable, try lowering
your Message TTL.
General Gnutella Tips
=====================
Just because it says "File Not Found", doesn't necessarily mean that
the user has stopped sharing it. Sometimes people move their shared
files around on their computer (something you should avoid.) Cancel
it and remove it from your download queue. Search for it again and
redownload it.
Please, avoid renaming files!!! Renaming files is a huge mistake and
wastes a lot of bandwidth in the long run. If you are introducing
new files to Gnutella (and if you are, I applaud you), make sure you
give them sensible and applicable names. If they are large files, be
sure to mention their size. If someone adds a virus or otherwise
tampers with an established file, it will become obvious when the
size doesn't match.
Many people unshare their files because they have too many requests at
once. This is because they are sharing too many files at once. If you
just share MP3s, then quantity really isn't an issue. But if have many
large game, application or video files, it's better to share just a
few at a time. Spend several days to several weeks sharing these same
files and then switch to something else. Also, place them all in their
own individual folders so you can share/unshare them without affecting
other files that you might want to share. Dumping all your files in
one share folder is not ideal.
When deciding what files to share, search for what you already have,
and if you can't find it, share it!
Most important of all, stop freeloading. Live by this simple rule and
Gnutella will be better for everyone: If you download a file, upload
it at least twice. Share!
Another User's Suggestions and Observations
===========================================
I have noticed a great deal of low bandwidth problems on the Gnutella
network. If you aren't sure how to set up your program, here are a
few tips and pointers. If you have any others, please add and pass
this along:
-Upload speed is probably different from download speed. Go to
www.pcpitstop to check what your speeds are. I use @home cable and
I download at ~3000K/bps and upload at around 300K/bps. That upload
speed is as fast as anyone can get anything from you. Cut down your
Host connections to no more than %25 of your total upload bandwidth.
For me, that is 5-7 connections. If you are having a problem with
searching, increase the # of hops that the search is allowed, or the
Message TTL.
-If you aren't sharing, shame on you. How did you get what you have
if folks aren't sharing? Sharing makes the system work and it keeps
me from having to stay online just so people can get my stuff. Some
of the files I have I know that people aren't getting anywhere else,
so please!! Once you get it, share it!!!!
-Searches are pretty ridiculous. If you want something, use the right
words. If you want to get an idea of just how many people are
initiating searches, look under the monitor tab and watch the ticker
zip through all the people looking for picking peanuts out of poop.
Keep your searches to a minimum and look for exactly what it is you
want. Use general words that don't bring up too many results and
then browse through what you get in return. Don't misspel,
stoopid!! Each unnecessary search eats up my pings!
-Don't allow too many file shares. With my upload speed, I allow 5
and I think that is too many because people only average about 70k
bandwidth when they connect to me. It also kills my download speed
because of the handshaking nature inherent in the system. I keep it
that high because nobody is SHARING!!! and I want to give people a
chance to download what I have. Also, folks on a dialup can't
download that fast anyway. Sometimes I put my Kbps limit to 150 so
that my download speed doesn't get affected, but I have to cut the
shared number to two so that people can still download from me with
some degree of speed.
-Shut down other bandwidth-eating applications like MSN Messenger,
Infogate, or pretty much anything else that connects to the internet.
Don't shut down firewalls or Virus Protection software, though.
-If you are on a dialup or other slow connection, don't be a jerk and
download a long file from somebody with a fast connection. You are
eating up a space that someone could use to get something fast and
create a more broad availability. you can show speed on your
searches by right-clicking on the File Name bar at the top and
checking speed. Click Speed to put and arrow on it and sort your
searches by speed. Some of those people can upload at phenomenal
rates and the last thing they need is someone clogging them up with
a 33kbps request. If you don't like your speed, spend some money
like I did and get a dsl or cable modem and share your damn files.
-If you use limewire, block users that don't share. If you use
Bearshare, block IPs of people that aren't playing nice. If you
need to, cut your shares down to a minimum, download what you want
quickly, then stay online doing nothing but sharing. Let the
program run while you are away from your computer. Give the other
folks a chance to get what you have. It's our network, so we have
to police it. Have fun and happy downloading!
