AVIA Guide to Home Theater
Ovation Software's AVIA Guide to Home Theater is the key to
understanding and optimizing a home theater whether you already
own or are planning one. This DVD combines tutorials on home
theater basics, in depth information about audio and video topics, and
advanced digital test tones and patterns. Use AVIA to optimize your
home theater's performance.
Navigating AVIA*
AVIA's intuitive on screen interface lets you easily explore and control
the program using your DVD's remote control. Use the arrow & "Enter"
keys to select menu items and buttons. Just highlight a desired topic
using the arrow keys and then press the "Enter" key. The "Title" button
brings you back to the initial title menu that appeared when you first
inserted the DVD. After viewing a segment in AVIA. use the remote's
"Menu" button to return to a recent submenu. The "Next" and "Prev"
keys are used for moving forwards and backwards through sections
and test patterns. An easy way to access specific sections of the
program is to go to the chapter the section is in. and then advance to
the subject you want. Please note your remote control may label its
buttons differently. Some remotes label "Enter" as "Return" and "Prev"
and "Next" as double arrows.
Title Menu
The Title menu is the one that appears when you first insert this disc
From the Title menu, you can choose the AVIA Basic Home Theater
video guide, go to the main AVIA menu, or go directly to Advanced
AVIA audio and video calibrations. We recommend first viewing the
video tutorial and exploring the "hot buttons" to learn more about
home theater. Later, you can use the main menu to go directly to any
topics you wish to explore in depth. Advanced users and professionals
can go directly to the test tones and patterns for calibrating equipment.
Main Menu (Comprehensive Menu)
The Main Menu, called the comprehensive menu in the live video
section, gives you easy access to all of AVIA DVD. From here, select
a subject area and you will see a submenu of topics. Selecting a topic
plays the video tutorial for that topic. Often you'll notice an "I" button
next to a topic. This indicates that in depth material is available for that
topic. Select the "I" button to view text plates, pictures, or video that
covers the topic in more detail.
Calibration Menu
The Calibration menu lets you select tutorials and new, digitally
synthesized audio signals and video patterns specially designed for
setting up and testing home theater systems. Use this section along
with a sound pressure meter and the included red, green, and blue
color filters for testing and adjusting your home theater equipment.
We suggest beginning with "Main Speaker Setup" and "Subwoofer
Setup" to correctly set up your speakers. Each test tone is accompanied
by an explanation of its use. Navigate through audio tests using your
remote control's "Next," "Prev," and "Menu" buttons. You can also go
directly to an audio test from a menu. The "Verification/Evaluation"
section includes tests for testing of audio system performance,
Learn to properly adjust your video display with the "Basic Video
Adjustments" tutorial. Once you've learned how to properly set the
basic controls, you can also use "Basic Patterns" to quickly access
the basic patterns. Advanced users will find the extensive "Video Test
Patterns" section especially interesting. Each test pattern is accompanied
by usage information for that pattern. Just select the "?" button next to
a pattern's name to learn its use. The "Next" and "Prev" buttons on
your remote move you through a sequence of patterns, and the
Menu" button returns you to a recent menu.

*With more than 2,400 "buttons" and more than 8,000 possible navigation
commands, the AVIA Guide to Home Theater is the most complex DVD-Video
title produced to date. Some players cannot accommodate the disc's complexity.
If you are having a problem with highlighting on the menus, the problem is an
interaction between the way the AVIA disc implements highlighting and the
way some players recognize the subtitle picture mechanism. Some players
don't recognize the presence of data, therefore no highlighting appears for the
on-screen buttons and menus. There are two easy solutions:
1 The easiest method is to press the subtitle button on your remote control.
You may also need to press the menu button on the remote to get the player
using the highlights.
2. A second way to activate the highlighting is to go into the DVD player's
setup menu and set subtitle default to "On." It shouldn't matter which
language you select. This should allow the highlighting in AVIA to work.
Once you have highlighting enabled on the player, the AVIA disc becomes
MUCH easier to use. When you are finished with the AVIA session, go back
and set subtitles default back to "Off." The "Hot Buttons" are actually the text
which appears to the left of the talking head. Use the arrow buttons on the
remote to select one of the topics then press enter. (This, of course, assumes
that you have highlighting working on your DVD player.)
Biographies
David Ranada, perhaps the media's leading engineering authority on digital
audio and video, is the writer of this AVIA disc, its technical advisor, and the
creator of its audio test tones. Well known to consumer electronics enthusiasts,
he was the technical editor of High Fidelity magazine and was the long-time
technical editor of Stereo Review, until that magazine merged with Video
David now serves as technical editor of the merged publication, Stereo Review's
Sound & Vision.
Dr. Guy Kuo, president of Ovation Software, is responsible for the program's
video calibration patterns as well as other sections As the principal creator of
Ovation's critically acclaimed CD ROM version of the AVIA Guide to Home
Theater, Dr. Kuo developed many innovative features. He has used the DVD-
Video format to advance those ideas and features. Dr. Kuo has been actively
involved in high tech consumer electronics and audio/video projects for many
years. As a partner in KS Labs, he developed accelerators for computers.
