Until recently, you could convert Audible.com download files (.aa extension) to MP3 by simply opening the file in Goldwave and then doing a save-as to create an MP3.
Goldwave would use the Audible Codec to open the file. Anyone that has signed up with Audible has the Codec since it is part of the Audible Manager software.
Now that the latest version of Audible Manager put a stop to that and Goldwave can no longer open the .aa files. Instead you get a status dialog in Goldwave that says: "Deflashing..." with a % complete indicator. The % complete increases until reaching 99% and then freezes.
I know that there are processes to use the CD Burning process in Audible Manager to capture .WAV files which can be converted to MP3, but for an unabridged book it would work out expensive and very time consuming... BUT!!! fret not, it can be done simply:
Firstly, completely uninstall the new version of Audible Manager and install version 3.5 (there's a link further down)
Now you can open the .aa file in GOldwave, which is the best program I have found for this. Its shareware, and if you are very naughty, and too poor/tight to pay, try this...

The .aa wont list as a supported filke type, so select All files and it will show up.
Cut the opening bit of the file ("This is Audible") and the end credits
You'll want to split the file up, so do this:
Set points for splitting: Tools, Cue Points, Auto Cue (my prefs are -30dB, 1.5 sec, 10 mins), OK, Close.
Save as wav (PCM signed, 16 bit mono)
Split file by: Tools, Cue Points, Split file, (saved as small 10 min long wav files), Close, then optionally close the wav file.
I then normally use Lame/RazorLame to encode to mp3, but you can use Goldwave: File, Batch Processing, Add Folder, OK. Specify mp3 attributes on convert tab (my prefs are Layer3, 24000Hz, 32kbps, mono), specify destination folder on folder tab. Begin. Once finished encoding, OK, Cancel. Quit Goldwave.
Optionally, delete the wav files (both the single large and the small split ones to save disk space) Done.
At roughly 14 MB per hour (of mono 32kbps), I can get well over 40 hours on one CD.
Time required is very minimal once you get the hang of it. Start to finish = less than 10 mins.
You don't even need to split the file, but an 8-16 hour mp3 file is quite hefty!!

Be sure to completely uninstall AudibleManager before installing a different version. You should find and save your aa files to another folder. (search files and folders for *.aa)
BTW: The guy that has put together Goldwave has done an awesome job. I think he is very deserving of the shareware fee. I encourage everyone to support efforts like this one by purchasing the programs.
