January 6, 2005 - Hef's Playboy Mansion, the ultimate bachelor pad and setting for the first-ever Playboy video game, Playboy: The Mansion, has captured the imagination of countless fans who aspire to the Playboy lifestyle. Representing one of the most-famous estates on the planet was such a challenge because bringing Hef's lifestyle to the gaming world meant first being able to immerse the player in the experience of building his own dream house.
The Playboy Mansion in Reality
Fortunately, there was an abundance of material available on the Playboy Mansion to get us started, including a book by Gretchen Edgren Inside the Playboy Mansion. Another of our first steps was to research photos of the Playboy Mansion and the grounds, which span just 5.7 acres, but the tour took over four hours.

The Playboy Mansion was built in 1927, and still retains all of the lavish original wood and stonework. In 1971, Hef bought the estate as a West Coast version of the Chicago Mansion. The Big Bunny, Hef's black jet, was purchased shortly thereafter to support his now rigorous travel schedule between the two locations.
The most dramatic change that Hef immediately made to the Playboy Mansion was on the back lawn. Here, he conceived and executed plans for a lagoon-shaped pool and naturalistic Grotto, complete with two in-pool entrances under separate waterfalls.
The Playboy Mansion grounds also contain an aviary, monkey colony, tennis court, separate game house, gym, and a wide variety of animals freely roaming the grounds, from flamingoes and the spectacular albino peacock to the more common dogs and cats.
Recreating The Mansion in Playboy: The Mansion
Several days were spent organizing the resource material and brainstorming stylistic and technical details. Initially, we planned on giving the player three stylistic options - Classic (using much of the actual Playboy Mansion resource material), Modern (sleek, angular, blacks and whites and muted colors), and Pop (retro, curvy and colorful).
