10 things you should know about Autodesk Vault
1) Autodesk Vault stores 3D documents and data. However it does not control or put guidelines on that data. It does not enforce naming or storing conventions or even put rules in place for what data should be filled in or how data should be filled in. Without the enforcement of rules, what guarantees that a search really returns the document(s) that you are looking for?
2) Autodesk Vault has integrations with a few Autodesk products and integrations with some Microsoft products. However it does nothing for all other applications that produce data. Manual steps performed by the end-user are required to work with such documents.
3) Autodesk Vault is focused on 3D manufacturing. It does not provide functionality for 2D environments or any engineering environment outside manufacturing like utilities, asset management, construction, GIS, etc.
4) A user can be equipped with Autodesk Vault without much preparation. The reason for this is that Autodesk Vault has only one way of working and the configuration options are very limited. The API of Vault and Productstream can only be used for data manipulation and not to intervene with the behavior of the product through for example events.
5) Autodesk Vault is a single-site engineering solution. There is no focus on what appens outside engineering or that multiple sites may want to collaborate using for example web-enabled technologies.
6) Autodesk Vault requires an Inventor seat to be used. Users without Inventor need to buy a license that is $2000. With more than 10 users, you need to purchase your SQL separately for all users including those initial 10 users.
7) Autodesk Vault predecessors were called Workcenter, Motiva, Volo-view Explorer and Streamline. For the most part, Autodesk has abandoned both the products as well as their users without any prior notice.
8) Autodesk Vault is positioned as PLM. PLM is a solution sell that is based on knowledge and services. 98% of Autodesk's revenue comes from selling software boxes.
9) Autodesk Vault creates local copies of all documents that are in-progress, requiring you to have a backup procedure for all workstations to ensure that your changes to your 3D documents are not lost because of a workstation crash.
10) Autodesk is a 1 billion dollar company. For Autodesk Vault and Productstream to be 5% of their business, they need to sell 50 million US$ of Vault. This means that they have to sell 50.000 copies a year after reseller margins. Autodesk has never maintained a product line that was only 5% of their business.
