Hi folks,
Just a friendly warning to eDonkey users. When you're connected to eDonkey hackers know:
(a) you're probably using Windows.
(b) you're probably going to be connected for a long time.
(c) you're probably not even sitting in front of your computer.
This is fantastic news for them! Why? Because you're the ideal target. And if your computer
has a high speed connecting you're the ideal catch. They can run great IRC, HTTP,
and FTP services if they hack you, and they can trigger off powerful "denial of service"
attacks from your machine.
How do I know this? Because I am running a firewall and I can see their attempts. I see
lots of illegal connection attempts to my computer (but my firewall saves me from them).
I see these attempts at least once an hour.
Do two things for yourself today:
1. Get yourself a firewall. Try ZoneAlarm [http://www.zonealarm.com FREE for individuals], or Norton's firewall. They're not difficult
to learn.
2. Get yourself a modern virus checker and run it on everything you download. Be very
careful when you install software from eDonkey. Why? Because hackers can
easily add a program ("trojan") that lets them into your computer.
Do one thing for all the other users today:
*** Tell them about the danger!
After doing these things you can continue to use eDonkey safe in the knowledge only a
great hacker could crack your machine, and even then he wouldn't be interested in small
fry like yourself ;-)
PS: Don't forget... share your bandwidth! Share out useful stuff you haven't seen on
eDonkey!
