NOTE: I have prepared archives that perform the following steps automatically
if you used the default install directory. But you still might find this useful!

Some MapSource/MetroGuide packages will BREAK your install.
So READ CAREFULLY!
Specifically, some packages come with version 2.0 of the application rather
than 3.0, and installing 2.0 after 3.0 causes neither installation to work.
The workaround is to install a 3.0-based package first. When installing an
additional package, check whether its a 2.0 or 3.0 based package. If it's
3.0, then you're all set, use the SETUP.EXE in the package. Keep reading,
because there's one more thing you'll need to do.
If it's 2.0 based, DO NOT RUN SETUP! You'll have to install it manually.
Each MapSource/MetroGuide comes with one or more "Map sets". A map set is
comprised of:
1. A "preview" .img file
2. A TBD file
3. A directory of detailed .img files
Registry entries tell the MapSource entries how to access each Map Set. In
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Garmin\MapSource\Products, a folder is created for each Map
Set. Each folder seems to have a short simple name. For example, MetroGuide US
installs three sets, MGWest (10), MGEast (11), and MGRegion(12). I imagine that
Garmin ensures that each product uses a different directory name, but in
practice, it doesn't seem to matter. Any name at all seems to work.
To install manually, copy the top level .img and .tdb files to a place of your
choosing. I put mine in C:\Program Files\Garmin\MapSource. Then, create the
registry entries so that the MapSource application can locate the map sets. You
will need to repeat this process for each Map Set.
For example, The MGEast Map Set had the following keys:
Bmap: REG_SZ: C:\Program Files\Garmin\MapSource\MGEast.img
Loc: REG_SZ: C:\Program Files\Garmin\MapSource\MGEast
Tdb: REG_SZ: C:\Program Files\Garmin\MapSource\MGEast.tdb
Where MGEast is a directory containing all of the high-resolution .img files.
If you ran SETUP because your application was 3.0 based, you'll notice that
all of the registry settings were set up for you, except that Loc points to
your temporary install directory. Well, copy the folder containing the
high resolution map data to your MapSource install directory and update the
Loc entry appropriately.
